Is it hard to become a speech therapist and how long does it take to get ur phd in it?


I'm a senior in high school and I want to become a speech pathologist.

AndrewB 		I would say that getting a PhD in speech therapy/pathology would be just as difficult and time-consuming as getting a PhD in anything else. Before going into it, you need to know that it's what you want to spend the rest of your life doing. I think it's great that you already know that it's what you want to do, and I see it as a sign that you're committed and will one day be a great speech therapist/pathologist.

majy25 		Its not hard but you need to be a patient person. You need a Bachelors degree in Speech Pathology or Communications and Language Disorders or a similar field (Linguistics, Communications, Biology, Psychology etc). You need to make sure that you take the prerequisites need for Grad school

Then you will need to do a Masters in Speech pathology (3 years) This qualifies you to practice as a speech pathologist once you pass all licensing exams.

You do not need a Doctorate in it unless you plan to carry out research in the field or teach it in college.

mgraham 		Is it hard to become one? Depends on who you ask. It's certainly very competitive to get accepted. Some people will tell you the actual courses are difficult (content-wise or just the number of them at once) and some people will say they're not so hard.

You don't always need an undergrad in linguistics, Speech path or similar; you can do bridging courses afterwards. However ideally if you had a related undergrad you wouldn't need more time and money to do those bridging courses.

The Master's in speech path is not typically 3 years - it's 2. But the other poster was right that you don't need a PhD... (yet... PT and audiology have already upped their requirements to a PhD, I believe).
